ACTIVITIES

Towering glaciers, amazing wildlife encounters, snow- covered landscapes, massive icebergs and the option to choose your favourite activities every day make this popular voyage the perfect introduction to the white continent.
In the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, we spend our days off the ship exploring by Zodiac boat, making shore landings in the company of our expert guides. By breaking into small special-interest groups, we discover Antarctica and its remarkable wildlife through photography, Zodiac excursions, hiking onshore, and for the more adventurous, camping
and sea kayaking. Visits to historic sites and active scientific research locations add another dimension to the voyage.

This classic 10-night expedition features a long list of highlights including a visit to Elephant Island - a location forever connected to the remarkable story of survival by Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men more than a century ago, a day spent exploring the icy Weddell Sea and many of the well-known landing sites along the length of the Antarctic Peninsula. Add a few of the lesser-known hidden gems - and this has all the makings of an exceptional and unique journey. A final highlight of the voyage will be a visit to the enchanting South Shetland Islands. Here, we hope to visit Deception Island and other nearby locations such as the Aitcho Islands. This carefully-designed itinerary provides incredible diversity of both sights and experiences and showcases all of our favourite locations, discovered over more than two decades spent exploring the region.

ACTIVITIES

Photography

South Georgia has rightly been called ‘the greatest wildlife show on earth’ and after our in depth exploration of this remote island in the South Atlantic, we are certain you will agree. This seldom-visited corner of the planet is a place we know intimately and look forward to visiting every season. Even our experienced expedition staff, some with more than 100 journeys into the polar regions, cherish every visit to South Georgia.

Traditionally, our visits to South Georgia last only three or four days and are part of a much longer itinerary that includes Antarctica. However, after many years of careful preparation and planning, we now offer the unique opportunity to spend eight full days of exploration. This is more than double the time traditionally spent exploring South Georgia.

This particular departure is timed to coincide with the arrival of spring, a time of intense wildlife activity. November is a critical time in the wildlife migration and breeding cycle for many species. Scenes of male elephant seals battling for control of the beaches (and the female harems), the intimate and beautiful courtship rituals of the albatross and antics of the young penguin chicks, will have you believing you are 'on the set' of your very own wildlife documentary. For lovers of remote, small-ship expedition cruising, this voyage ticks all the boxes.

This exciting expedition, which includes flights, provides great diversity and will appeal to those seeking a truly comprehensive Antarctic experience. It includes visits to the South Shetland Islands, the western and northern sections of the Antarctic Peninsula, the stunning and wild Weddell Sea region located on the eastern side of the Peninsula, and the historic location of Elephant Island – a place forever connected to the epic story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance expedition 100 years ago. Adding to the experience will be a visit to several locations in the Falkland Island archipelago –home to nesting albatross and the colourful King penguin.

These diverse locations each feature their own unique attractions. Stunning glaciated scenery along the Antarctic Peninsula, enormous Adelie penguin rookeries and the flattopped ‘tabular’ icebergs in the Weddell Sea, copious history in the South Shetland’s and Elephant Island - and a whole new range of wildlife species to observe in the Falkland Islands.

Throughout the voyage, our expedition ship acts as a floating wilderness lodge, which we reposition every day to yet another exciting location. You will be spoiled for choice by all of the activities we have planned. Short walks or longer hikes on shore to visit wildlife colonies, historic sites and science bases, cruising in the Zodiac boats looking for whales and seals, and spending time with the resident photography expert. The more adventurous might like to join the sea kayaking program, or perhaps spend a night camping on the ice – the choice is yours.

We maximise our time on this voyage by flying from South America to Antarctica, saving the two days that we would spend crossing the Drake Passage. A further day and a half is saved, by flying back to South America from the Falkland Islands at the end of the voyage. The time saved by flying to the start and end points, enables us to spend maximum time exploring the region you have come so far to experience. Over the course of 12-days, you can expect to be off the ship exploring in the company of our expert guides for nine of those twelve days.

This unique itinerary has been designed for those who want the most in-depth experience possible.

Main Deck Triple
