Ushuaia holds the crown for the southernmost city in the world. A 40-hour cruise away from the South Shetland Islands, it is no surprise that this city is the most popular starting point for an Antarctic expedition.
More than just a busy port for the Antarctic-bound vessels, Ushuaia is a paradise for those who enjoy outdoor activities. The landscape, with its combination of forests, mountains, and sea, is sublime. Ushuaia is also the starting point for Tierra del Fuego National Park, located only 12 km from the city.
Getting to Ushuaia is very easy, with frequent direct flights from Buenos Aires. Wayfinders can assist you with everything you need to know about the city before your departure – our director lived in Ushuaia for 12 years, so we have firsthand knowledge of the region.
This Chilean city, located 600 km from Ushuaia on the Strait of Magellan, is another gateway to Antarctica. It is the base for the Fly the Drake cruises, where passengers will fly from Punta Arenas to King George Island in Antarctica (or vise versa) without having to navigate the Drake Passage. Once there, passengers will board the ship to begin their expedition.
