There is no best time to travel to Antarctica. Each month of the austral spring and summer is different, and each has its particular charm. The date you choose will have to do, exclusively, with the interests of each traveller. From the beginning of the season to the end, Antarctica is a space full of dynamism, where change is commonplace.
The first trips of the season, in November, offer a more pristine image of Antarctica, with more snow and sea ice. It is also mating season for the penguins, which can be quite entertaining.
By mid-December, the days tend to be warmer and longer. It is during this time that the Adélie penguin chicks begin to hatch. By mid-January, it is common to see chicks of various species in their nests being fed by their parents.
February and March, although the coldest months of the season, are the best time to see whales, especially humpback whales. From a landscape perspective, the best sunsets and sunrises happen during these months. You may also see leopard seals hunting penguin chicks as this is when the chicks are more independent, entering the ocean for the first time. No matter when you choose to go, Antarctica will offer something unique and worth exploring.
