ACTIVITIES

This exciting expedition, which includes flights, provides great diversity and will appeal to those seeking a truly comprehensive Antarctic experience. It includes visits to the South Shetland Islands, the western and northern sections of the Antarctic Peninsula, the stunning and wild Weddell Sea region located on the eastern side of the Peninsula, and the historic location of Elephant Island – a place forever connected to the epic story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance expedition 100 years ago. Adding to the experience will be a visit to several locations in the Falkland Island archipelago –home to nesting albatross and the colourful King penguin.

These diverse locations each feature their own unique attractions. Stunning glaciated scenery along the Antarctic Peninsula, enormous Adelie penguin rookeries and the flattopped ‘tabular’ icebergs in the Weddell Sea, copious history in the South Shetland’s and Elephant Island - and a whole new range of wildlife species to observe in the Falkland Islands.

Throughout the voyage, our expedition ship acts as a floating wilderness lodge, which we reposition every day to yet another exciting location. You will be spoiled for choice by all of the activities we have planned. Short walks or longer hikes on shore to visit wildlife colonies, historic sites and science bases, cruising in the Zodiac boats looking for whales and seals, and spending time with the resident photography expert. The more adventurous might like to join the sea kayaking program, or perhaps spend a night camping on the ice – the choice is yours.

We maximise our time on this voyage by flying from South America to Antarctica, saving the two days that we would spend crossing the Drake Passage. A further day and a half is saved, by flying back to South America from the Falkland Islands at the end of the voyage. The time saved by flying to the start and end points, enables us to spend maximum time exploring the region you have come so far to experience. Over the course of 12-days, you can expect to be off the ship exploring in the company of our expert guides for nine of those twelve days.

This unique itinerary has been designed for those who want the most in-depth experience possible.

EXPEDITION IN BRIEF

This special journey takes us further south than at any other time in the season. By flying to King George Island in Antarctica at the start of the voyage, we save two days on the ocean crossing. The time we save by flying south, allows for a more substantial exploration below the Antarctic Circle. Here we witness stunning landscapes, sizable Adelie penguin rookeries and large flat-topped tabular icebergs that drift north from the Bellingshausen Sea. We always anticipate exciting ice navigation when we push this far south.

We navigate the glaciated coastline of the Antarctic Peninsula, passing through the Argentine Fish and Yalour Island archipelagos on our way to the Gerlache Strait region. There are several important scientific stations here and a number of significant historic sites we hope to explore. We then aim to cross 66 degrees, 33 minutes south latitude, which officially marks the position of the Antarctic Circle on the global map. With favourable weather and ice conditions we hope to reach Marguerite Bay. This is a spectacular location reached by just a handful of ships each season.

Every day we explore off the ship in the company of our expert local guides, enjoying shore visits and Zodiac cruises that may last up to three and four hours at a time. This trip is ideal for those who love the excitement and spontaneity of exploration. There is no better way to travel than via our expedition ship, cruising to remote destinations.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

  • Day 1 – Punta Arenas, Chile to King George Island, Antarctica
  • Days 2 to 6 – Antarctic Peninsula towards the Circle
  • Days 7 to 9 – Detaille Island, Marguerite Bay
  • Days 10 and 11 – Drake Passage, return to South America
  • Day 12 – Ushuaia, Argentina

EXPEDITION IN BRIEF

This exciting new Antarctic expedition provides a modern twist on a much-loved classic. Utilizing our decades of experience exploring Antarctica, we have designed a new voyage allowing us to reach our objective of the Antarctic Circle in just 11 days. On the way south, we enjoy eight days of off-ship exploration along the Antarctic Peninsula, visiting a large number of landing sites and cruising among the ice floes in our Zodiac boats. We use our time efficiently, by embarking in the port of Stanley – the quaint capital of the Falkland Islands. Crossing south to Antarctica we witness the magnificent pelagic seabirds of the southern region, including the giant Wandering albatross. This ocean habitat teems with life above and below the water and is a fascinating ecosystem in its own right.

We navigate the ship south, hoping to reach the Antarctic Circle in the vicinity of Detaille Island. Returning to the north, we aim to visit several classic locations such as Petermann Island, and the iceberg ‘graveyard’ at Pleneau Island. We transit the Lemaire Channel if ice conditions permit and make continental landings at Paradise Harbour or nearby Neko Harbour. Both locations offer outstanding hiking opportunities. Each day we explore on shore by foot, observing wildlife colonies, visiting historic huts and science bases, photographing icebergs and soaking up the incredible landscapes that surround us. The adventure is not over and we complete our voyage with visits to several locations in the South Shetland Islands, including Deception Island. We disembark the ship at King George Island and fly back to South America in just two hours – saving more than two days crossing the open waters of the Drake Passage. For a relatively short voyage, this trip packs a serious punch and offers fantastic scenery, wildlife, historic and scientific interest.

EXPEDITION IN BRIEF

This exciting new expedition has been many years in the making. It is undoubtedly the most comprehensive journey to Antarctica ever offered. Only scientists and researchers, who spend many months working at the numerous research stations in Antarctica, can claim to spend more time ‘down on the ice’.

This unique experience links two existing voyages to create one ‘super adventure’. Over the course of three weeks, we spend an unprecedented 16 days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland Islands, the spectacular, icy Weddell Sea region and the wildlife-rich Falkland Islands. In practical terms, this voyage will provide you with more than THIRTY off-ship excursions. You will also experience one of the most incredible ‘White Christmas’ and see in the New Year surrounded by the incredible peaks of the Antarctic continent.

Over the durtion of the voyage, we visit wildlife colonies, historic sites, science bases and spend plenty of time ashore enjoying extended walks, many up to stunning viewpoints. In our Zodiac boats, we cruise among the icefloes searching for whales and seals, or admiring and photographing the deep blue icebergs.

Over the course of our in-depth exploration, you are accompanied by expert guides – including qualified naturalists, marine biologists, glaciologists, bird experts, historians and adventure guides. All have their áreas of expertise and will educate you through fascinating presentations and lively, interactive discussions aboard the ship. Our resident professional photographer is also there to help you capture Antarctica through the camera lens. If you have the time, and want to experience the most in-depth Antarctic experience ever offered, this could well be the trip you’ve been looking for.

About our combination voyage:

This 21-night voyage is a combination of the 10-night ‘Quest for the Antarctic Circle’ voyage, and the 11-night ‘Ultimate Antarctica – Weddell Sea and Falklands’ voyage. Your trip starts and finishes in Punta Arenas, and includes the flights to and from Stanley, in the Falkland Islands. On Day 11, the ship will be anchored at King George Island. Some of your fellow passengers will disembark here, at the completion of the 10-night voyage and fly back to South America. Others will join for the 11-night trip as we make our way back to the Falklands. As this voyage is comprised of two shorter expeditions, it is likely we will visit a number of our favourite locations for a second time, such as Deception Island and Neko Harbour. These are such beautiful spots, with a range of different shore activities of offer, it will be a thrill to experience these places at different times, in different weather and in different moods. This combination trip offers incredible diversity and provides a huge variety of onshore experiences, at dozens of unique landing sites.

ACTIVITIES

By March, the short Antarctic summer is drawing to a close and bays and harbours that have been ice choked since winter become free of such impediments. As a result, our access to landing sites increases significantly. Penguin chicks are almost fully-grown and are quickly shedding their downy coats in preparation to take to the sea before winter arrives.

March is also a time of great activity in and under the water and historically, we encounter a much higher concentration of whales during this period. Whales are busy feeding on the huge biomass of krill in preparation for their migrations to tropical waters far to the north. However, scientists are now discovering that some humpback whales remain in the ice-free sections of Antarctica over winter and hypothesize this may be due to the effects of climate change.

On this voyage we plan to visit several known locations along the Antarctic Peninsula that are the focus of long-term research projects by esteemed academic institutions including Oregon State University (USA) and Stanford University (USA). We are joined on the ship by several world-renowned cetacean (whale) experts and observe their important fieldwork in close proximity. They share with us unique underwater footage and scientific data and interpret the behavior, migration characteristics and feeding patterns of adult whales and their calves. Their participation on our voyage is greatly valued and provides a fascinating glimpse into world of Antarctic science.

Antarctica’s seals are also found in sizable numbers late in the season, resting and storing energy that will sustain them over the cold months ahead. For those with a passion for whales and seals – and an interest in the important science happening in Antarctica – this unique voyage should not be missed. Oh, did we mention it’s also our favourite time of the year for blistering orange and pink Antarctic sunrises and sunsets?

EXPEDITION IN BRIEF

Towering glaciers, amazing wildlife encounters, snow-covered landscapes, massive icebergs and the option to choose your favourite activities each and every day make this voyage the perfect introduction to the white continent. In the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, we spend our days off the ship exploring by Zodiac boat, making several shore landings each day in the company of our expert guides.
